Energy SME Program
A brief summary of the project:
The project will provide technical assistance
(TA) to micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME),
non governmental organizations (NGOs), Coops,
and Government in order to increase the role of
MSME in Nicaragua’s energy supply, strengthen
and diversify smallscale energy supply chains,
and increase access to modern energy. The project
will focus on the following areas:
(i) Biomass. Cosponsor the “Second Mesoamerican
Woodenergy Forum” in Managua; strengthen MSME
to improve wood fuel supply chains; provide TA
to CNE and other national stakeholders on biomass
technologies and market development; analyze ongoing
programs for improved stoves; provide TA to MSME
and support technology transfer.
(ii) Hydro power and village grids. TA to MSME
interested in: pico hydro supply; charging batteries
for dispersed users around village grids (e.g.,
using the excess of hydro plants during times
of low local energy load).
(iii)PVbased power supply for remote uses. Strengthen
new and existing players by passing on lessons
learned on sales, financing and O&M for SHS to
diversify the local market which is currently
dominated by one firm. Address local shortage
in PV module supply. Increase M&E efficiency.
Assess potential and develop and implement and
incentive scheme for PVPico” i. e., PVmodules
from 5 to 15 Wp powering enhanced, portable ICTLightingKits
which will be sold (or leased) by rural MSME and
allow to serve the lowest income strata.
